Hello Everyone,
First off, how are you all doing? Have you managed to come down from the collective nail-biting and intensity of the election? I’m not sure I have just yet which is why I’ve decided to devote this newsletter to a topic completely unrelated to elections, the global stage, or anything serious with a capital ‘S’.
Instead, I want to talk about that itchy, dissatisfied feeling that comes along during the creative process.
Yes, it’s the “Angry Weasel” stage: that moment when you want to lash out, scrap your entire project, and direct a whole ton of hissing vitriol at your efforts so far. Dignified? No. Avoidable? Also, no.
I spent a lot of time waxing poetic about how tarot is a system that illustrates the entirety of the human experience etc. etc. But it’s really true. And this feeling is wonderfully shown in the sevens of the minor arcana. A brief rundown:
I find it amusing that these shifty, tricky cards often stymie readers, yet the feelings they evoke point straight to their meaning - frustration, dissatisfaction, confusion, and doubt. Sometimes, in tarot, you feel the meaning before you know it consciously.
As annoying as these cards can be, they’re also representative of a crucial and spiritual phase of the journey in the minor arcana. Think of it as the moment in a fairytale when a trickster creature gives you a confounding riddle that seemingly has nothing to do with your dilemma. Or an odd interlude that eventually shakes loose a pivotal piece of information. A distracting side-quest or siren song that tempts you to leave your path.
Sometimes we have to wrestle with our boredom, indecision, fear of commitment, or uncertainty. The Sevens don’t give us clear answers and we don’t necessarily “solve” the questions they pose - we just push on to the other side.
So, in the past week or so, I’ve been sitting in the discomfort of these sevens, an undignified, angry weasel unsure of why I’m so irritated and uninspired by my project. I’m emerging from the doldrums, however, with some insights - there is something good here, I need to push on through, and some elements do need to go so I can get back to the inspiration that brought me this far.
Because on the other side of the sevens? Its the diligence, follow-through, and balance of the eights. Weasel-phase, concluded, it’s time to finish the job.
